Words of Inspiration | Making Healthy Choices

I am sure we have all heard the wisdom “we are what we eat”. I like to say “we are what we eat, most of the time”. Over the last 50 years, many of us in Western countries are only now rediscovering what true food really is as opposed to processed items for consumption. You see, I call items in packages  “processed items for consumption”  rather than “processed food”” as I regard food as consumption being nutritious for our bodies. True food comes out of the earth and may be cooked or prepared before eaten – for example, broccoli is taken out of the ground and is steamed then lightly seasoned with oil & lemon. It still has all the nutrients we require for our good health however we have made it much more palatable by cooking/preparing it this way. However, in the cases of white sugar or white flour which we buy in packets –  both these are no longer a food anymore – in fact, they are now bordering unhealthy for us in this processed form.

With so many processed items for consumption readily available in convenience stores, supermarkets and the like these days, it is easy to go down the easy road and go for a quick fix when we are hungry or when we need comfort. However, what we need to realise is those consistent poor choices will eventually (in the medium to long term, sometimes over many years) affect our health and may even reduce our length of life. Many diseases including diabetes, blood pressure, cardiovascular issues, obesity, and various cancers (to name a few) are linked to a poor diet.I want to encourage you to find ways to go back to nature when it comes to eating. How do people eat in the healthiest regions in the world? Their meat is unprocessed (no preservatives or added chemicals), they eat ample fish and seafood, fresh vegetables, fresh salads, organically grown fruit, and have little availability of processed items. It is not uncommon in certain parts of the world (such as Ikaria in Greece, Okinawa in Japan and Sardinia in Italy) for people to live beyond 100 years of age, in good health and actively contributing in their communities.

Whilst we all know there are many other factors to longevity and good health including daily exercise, low stress levels, clean air and the like, there is one item we can all influence and that is what we put into our mouths. We have a choice to find and buy good healthy produce rather than processed items. I remember Bob Proctor once said along the lines that we are a “ spiritual being having a human experience”. That is a very interesting statement….think about it. We are housing our spirit in this temple called a physical body. And thus it makes logical sense that we should all put our efforts into taking good care of this temple so we can enjoy this human experience for as many years as we are able. “Your health is your wealth” is another wisdom I am sure we have all heard.

If we focus on being healthy, we will dramatically reduce the risk and increase the chances of living in a healthy body into our old age. It is all about risk reduction (yes you can never guarantee good health by eating healthy as there are many other factors involved some we know and some we don’t know) so that the probability is on our side to have good health. I encourage you to begin today to review what you are putting into your mouth and ask one simple question “Is this true food from nature as nature intended, or are they processed items for consumption?” This one question could change your life by changing your decisions. When you consistently change your decisions you will develop new better habits – ones aligned with good health and longevity. I sincerely wish you to have a healthy body that is able to withstand the challenges that come up in life and in doing so enable you to live a long fulfilling healthy life, for your health is your wealth.
