74 – Being Thankful (Grateful and Appreciative) when you have a problem
BY STAN KONTOS
A higher level of thankfulness is when we remain appreciative even when we have a problem (minor or major) to contend with – a real issue in life to deal with. If we can be thankful under duress then we are operating at a higher level and this is the level we should aspire to if we want to develop resilience.
I heard an old saying once “I used to worry about what others think of my shoes until I met someone who had no feet. Then I stopped worrying!” Now what if we find out that the person with no feet was a really happy person because he/she was so thankful that they had prosthetic or other devices to help them to walk, rather than remain miserable by focusing on the fact that they had no feet?
It is when we are under duress or pressure that the benefit of thankfulness comes through to inspire those around us (in our home, socially or at our workplace).
Thankfulness is when you fall over and graze your elbows and knees, but get up being thankful you didn’t break anything. You get on with life feeling good that it was only a minor accident. Thankfulness is when your business or investments fail (you lose your money) but you are grateful for the learning, grateful for the people you met and grateful for the new door that will now open for you to the next opportunity.
Let’s set a goal together this week to be thankful no matter what obstacle comes our way. In our life there will be trials and tribulations but we are more than over comers through our faith that if we remain thankful for what we have, rather than focusing on what we don’t have, then our life journey will be much more pleasant. Enjoy focusing on what is good rather than what is missing. The more you do this, the more you realise that you are in control of your mental state much more than what you thought. Joy comes to those who understand the power of thought and how it is linked to emotions. The better we think, the better we feel and hence the better our perception is of how our life is going.
Stay grateful through all circumstances.
