About our guest
In 1968 I joined my 56-year ld father in his tiny wholesale and tile business at the age of 18 as a stop gap before going to university to study engineering. I found, however, I had an aptitude for sales, marketing and business and decided to stay.
After working for 10 years in the warehouse, on deliveries and in sales, while studying marketing at a tertiary level, I became General Manager in 1978.
We outgrew our premises in Wright St Adelaide and shifted to 200 Grote St Adelaide in the 1970s. This became a catalyst for growth as I began to drive the business to growth focusing on both retail and trade rather than focusing almost exclusively on trade as we had at until that time. Through many years of growth through the traumatic years of the late 80s and early 90s when thousands of businesses went broke under the burden of near 20% interest rates imposed by the Keating government we barely survived but then thrived as we grew into Queensland, NT, Victoria, ACT and eventually the big NSW market. Later we added Tasmania and eventually WA only a year before I retired.
We eventually became the largest tile merchant in Australia with 116 stores in all states and territories.
I retired at the end of 2021 when we sold the business to Bunnings.
PERSONAL BACKGROUND
I am happily married to Sue and have 2 children and 3 grandchildren.
We are both retired, me most recently, after a career of nearly 53 years.
I have 3 older brothers all of whom had shares in the company and sat of the board of directors.
We are involved with a local church which we enormously enjoy.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS
Whilst we enjoy overseas travel we are not fanatical overseas travellers as many retirees are, preferring to do Australian based trips.
We are currently building a new home of our own design, which is more practical for us as we age, than our current home, a project which, by its nature is frustrating, but ultimately brings great satisfaction.
I meet regularly with individuals over coffee to encourage and mentor and with a business prayer group once a month.

About our guest
Creative Director and Founder, Paul Vasileff, learnt to sew from the age of three. Initially taught by his grandmother he completed his first evening dress at age eleven, Vasileff was fascinated by the inner workings and underpinnings of garments. With dreams of one day becoming a couture designer, he developed his skills by undertaking private lessons in pattern making and sewing from the age of thirteen.
After debuting his first collection at age seventeen to raving reviews from the public and press, Vasileff immediately began taking orders for private clients. Wanting to further his skills and knowledge he sought out an apprenticeship with an Italian tailor practicing in traditional sartorial methods, where he would develop his knowledge and technique. Shortly after, he was granted a scholarship to the prestigious Europeo Instituto di Design in Milan, Italy, where he graduated with honours.
After returning to Australia, Vasileff expanded the business to employ and train staff that were equally passionate about honouring the traditions of fine sewing.
In 2017, Vasileff was awarded ‘Young Australian of the Year’ for his work in founding Paolo Sebastian and its contribution to the Australian fashion industry. He was later awarded ‘Designer of The Year’ in the Prix de Marie Claire Awards. Vasileff continues to follow his dream, further developing the brand and business with an international clientele, annual showings in Paris, and adhering to the highest standards of craftsmanship.

Join us for a morning of inspiration and impact as we host Ian Steel, the visionary founder of KickStart for Kids, at our exclusive breakfast event. Ian’s story is one of compassion, determination, and the belief that every child deserves an equal chance in life.
In 2009, Ian Steel observed a critical issue affecting “at-risk” primary school children – hunger hindering their ability to concentrate and learn. As a builder by trade, Ian took matters into his own hands, starting a breakfast program that evolved into KickStart for Kids in 2011. The organization runs breakfast, lunch, and mentoring programs in South Australian schools, addressing not only hunger but also fostering positive educational outcomes.
Reserve your spot now and be part of a movement that believes in unlocking the potential of every child. Let’s come together to celebrate the power of education and ensure no child’s potential is hindered by hunger or hardship.
Helping school children achieve positive educational and self-esteem outcomes through breakfast, lunch, and mentoring programs
Wednesday 6 March 2024 | 7:00AM – 9:00AM
(networking from 6.30)
Adelaide Pavilion | Veale Gardens, cnr South Terrace & Peacock Road, Adelaide
About our guest
Ian Steel established KickStart for Kids, a not for profit organisation, after mentoring “at risk” primary school children. In 2009 Ian noticed that the children he was mentoring were always hungry and could not concentrate properly. After consulting with teachers and students it was discovered that of kids in lower socio-economic areas were coming to school without breakfast and no lunch.
A builder by trade, Ian started making sandwiches to take to schools before he went to work. In 2011 he founded KickStart for Kids on the belief that every child, regardless of their social or economic background, should have an equal chance.
On Australia Day 2017 Steel was recognised in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his service to children through social welfare programs.
KickStart For Kids is a not for profit organisation that helps school children achieve positive educational and self-esteem outcomes through breakfast, lunch and mentoring programs.
Not all kids have the same start in life. KickStart for kids was founded in 2011 on the belief that every child, regardless of their social or economic background, should have an equal chance. We do this by running breakfast, lunch and mentoring programs in South Australian schools. We also provide basic clothing and healthcare needs.
EDUCATION equals POWER and OPPORTUNITY
If children are hungry or encounter hardship, they are not able to fully engage at school, therefore, not achieving educational outcomes. We know from research that children who grow up in hardship are more likely to be uneducated, and live in hardship as adults. KickStart for Kids endeavours to level the playing field.
Ian started a breakfast program in 2009 and noticed immediate results. Kids became happy, friendly, were able to concentrate and had a much greater ability to learn.
Today KickStart for Kids supports over 300 South Australian Schools, providing around 40,000 breakfasts and 10,000 lunches per week with 600 volunteers.
