Join us for an inspiring morning with Bob Beaumont, hosted by SOL Results and Stan Kontos on Wednesday, June 5th. Bob’s journey from joining his father’s tile business at 18 to becoming Australia’s largest tile merchant is a testament to resilience and vision.

Through decades of dedication, Bob transformed the company from a modest operation to a nationwide powerhouse, weathering economic storms and expanding into new markets. His retirement in 2021 marked the end of a storied career, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and success.

About our guest

In 1968 I joined my 56-year ld father in his tiny wholesale and tile business at the age of 18 as a stop gap before going to university to study engineering. I found, however, I had an aptitude for sales, marketing and business and decided to stay.

After working for 10 years in the warehouse, on deliveries and in sales, while studying marketing at a tertiary level, I became General Manager in 1978.

We outgrew our premises in Wright St Adelaide and shifted to 200 Grote St Adelaide in the 1970s. This became a catalyst for growth as I began to drive the business to growth focusing on both retail and trade rather than focusing almost exclusively on trade as we had at until that time. Through many years of growth through the traumatic years of the late 80s and early 90s when thousands of businesses went broke under the burden of near 20% interest rates imposed by the Keating government we barely survived but then thrived as we grew into Queensland, NT, Victoria, ACT and eventually the big NSW market. Later we added Tasmania and eventually WA only a year before I retired.

We eventually became the largest tile merchant in Australia with 116 stores in all states and territories.

I retired at the end of 2021 when we sold the business to Bunnings.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

I am happily married to Sue and have 2 children and 3 grandchildren.

We are both retired, me most recently, after a career of nearly 53 years.

I have 3 older brothers all of whom had shares in the company and sat of the board of directors.

We are involved with a local church which we enormously enjoy.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS

Whilst we enjoy overseas travel we are not fanatical overseas travellers as many retirees are, preferring to do Australian based trips.

We are currently building a new home of our own design, which is more practical for us as we age, than our current home, a project which, by its nature is frustrating, but ultimately brings great satisfaction.

I meet regularly with individuals over coffee to encourage and mentor and with a business prayer group once a month.

Join us for breakfast on Wednesday 5th of June 2024. Book your seats today.
