Welcome the month of December, when we catch up with Dr. James Muecke.

Dr. James Muecke AM, graduated with Honors from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1987. Following his internship, James lived and worked as a doctor in Africa and subsequently as an eye surgeon in the Middle East, battling malaria, wild animals, and rebel soldiers.

He founded Sight For All in 2008, turning his boundless energy into a fight against blindness in the Aboriginal and mainstream communities of Australia and some of the poorest countries of Asia and Africa. Sight For All’s comprehensive and sustainable projects are now impacting on the lives of over one million people each year.

His commitment to social impact and humanitarian endeavors has earnt him a number of awards including an Order of Australia in 2012, the Australian Medical Association’s President’s Leadership Award in 2013, and Ernst & Young’s Social Entrepreneur for Australia in 2015. James is Australian of the Year for 2020.

James is a researcher, a teacher, an author, a musician, a photographer, and a film producer, and uses his many skills to deliver passionate, fascinating, and at times confronting presentations about his life, his work, philanthropy, resilience and social entrepreneurship.

A neurological condition impacting on his dexterity has forced James into a premature retirement from surgery. Not letting his disability slow him down, James has redirected his vigor to crafting films, and has a number of powerful documentaries under his belt and several compelling projects in production.

Young Australian of the year Isobel Marshall is the Director of Health and Education at TABOO and is part way through her degree in Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) and a Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Adelaide. Isobel is passionate about reproductive health and education programs, and has been awarded the 2021 Young Australian of the Year.

At just 18 years of age, Isobel Marshall co-founded TABOO with school friend Eloise Hall, to help women around the world by breaking down stigma around menstruation and providing greater access to hygiene products.

Isobel and business partner Eloise, crowdfunded $56,000 to launch their range of products in August 2019. TABOO sells high quality, ethically sourced, organic cotton pads and tampons to an Australian market, with 100 per cent of net profits going to One Girls – a charity providing education programs for girls and women in Sierra Leone and Uganda.

Locally, Isobel and TABOO have partnered with Vinnies Women’s Crisis centre, providing free access to pads and tampons for women who require emergency accommodation in South Australia. Recognising period poverty is not just a big city issue, they also support the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women’s Council.

Andrew is passionate about leadership and strategy and has recently completed the Owner President Management course at Harvard Business School. Andrew was named Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year (Central Region – Technology) in 2004. Andrew loves his role as ambassador for SAGE, he serves on a number of privately owned company boards. Grant Kelley joined Vicinity Centres in January 2018 as CEO and Managing Director.

Vicinity is one of Australia’s leading retail property groups with $26 billion in retail assets under management across 66 shopping centres, making it the second largest listed manager of Australian retail property. It is one of Australia top 50 largest public companies with a market capitalisation of $9.7 billion and 26,000 security holders.

Grant began his business career at Booz Allen & Hamilton before moving to Colony Capital, the world’s third largest private equity real estate fund. At Colony, Grant was initially responsible for the operating performance and strategic direction of its Korean and Japanese businesses, and then later appointed Chief Executive Officer Asia Pacific. In 2008, Grant founded Holdfast Capital Limited, an Asian-based real estate investment firm, which was acquired in 2010 by Apollo Management, one of the world’s largest alternative investment managers. He then became Co-Head of Asia Pacific for Apollo Global Management, leading the firm’s real estate activities in the region.

In 2014, Grant was appointed CEO at City Developments Limited, a global real estate company with 103 locations in 29 countries and one of Singapore’s largest companies. Listed on the Singapore Exchange, CDL’s portfolio comprises residences, offices, hotels, serviced apartments, integrated developments and shopping malls.

Grant graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Laws degree, has completed a Master’s degree in Economic Sciences from London University and has an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.

Grant is Chairman of the Adelaide 36ers, Chairman of Holdfast Assets, a Director of the Shopping Centre Council of Australia, a Governor of Pulteney Grammar School, a Council Member of the Asia Society Policy Institute and a member of the Premier’s Economic Advisory Council (South Australia).

Grant is a proud South Australian farmer, with a background in winemaking and sheep farming, and a self-confessed sports tragic with a passion for basketball which is useful since he owns the Adelaide 36ers.

We all face critical hurdles in our lives, but when we do, it is how we react that determines our future health and happiness. After Jodi’s death Nick made the brave decision to leave his job and use his experience to do all he could to stop others suffering a similar experience.

He established The Jodi Lee Foundation to inspire others to protect themselves against bowel cancer and make positive choices to improve their health. The work of the Foundation has saved many Australian lives.

As the Founder of The Jodi Lee Foundation, Nick developed a passion for corporate health and a strong desire to improve the health of ordinary Australians. Join us at Breakfast at the Next Level, on Wednesday 2 June 2021, when we meet Marie Shaw QC. She is a pioneer and trailblazer in the legal profession as well as a lifechanging force lovingly shaping at risk youth into extraordinary community leaders.

With a burning passion focussed on improving community wellbeing, Marie’s work as the Co-founder of Ice Factor Program for at risk and disengaged youth -since 2005, is making a profound difference to the lives of young people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. It currently supports youth in 17 high schools in S.A through the discipline and teamwork, training and playing competitive ice hockey.

Starting in 1975 as a young clerk, working for Moran & McRae, Barristers & Solicitors, Marie worked hard during these years and as a result she became a partner in 1982 and commenced practice as a Barrister at the Independent Bar in 1985.

Over the next four decades, Marie made a powerful impact in the High Court, Federal Court, Supreme Court, Industrial Court, Family Court and the various Tribunals.

In her early years, growing up in Warrachie, Eyre Peninsula, Marie had burning willpower to achieve an education. Coming from a small country town, Marie felt she had to fight her way to the top, leaving her with a sense of not fully belonging.

Once at Loreto College boarding school, Marie made an admission that she could use hard work to overcome a sense of inadequacy and low self-esteem. She joined a school debating team, which won her an American Field Service Scholarship to live in the US for a year. After returning home, Marie concentrated her new experiences into something positive, and that ambition still frames her life today.

Meeting her future husband Phil, a police cadet at the time, her path into law was opened. Her longstanding marriage to Phil is a rare achievement among barristers, a first marriage still going 44 years later.

At that stage they had two children Marie and Phil decided to move to the country, to Bute, wanting her family growing up as she had.

After two years they bought a small farm at Mallala, which they still own today, and had their third child, diagnosed with dyslexia in her early years. It was the start of a difficult journey that brought Marie indirectly to her great passion, which is the Ice Factor. She is a dedicated philanthropist and devotes most of her spare time to the Ice Factor program which helps troubled teenagers, for whom the system is ready to give up on.

Marie has seen countless kids in court and knew what they had been through to get there – a trail of neglect, dysfunction, alcohol and drugs. She thought ice hockey might help these kids who couldn’t cope with school. The first 15 “Ice Factor kids” were from Parafield High and they were from “the dungeon” where they went during the day instead of normal lessons. Some were homeless and addicted to drugs, and had been in trouble fighting or stealing cars. That was the first pilot project 12 years ago.

Helping others is what Marie loves, and it is the Ice Factor program that drives her and gives her a sense of her own value. “This program is preventing so many kids from ending up in the criminal justice system — and not costing the state $100,000 a year,” she says. “So many of them go on to have very strong and productive lives.”

Welcome the month of April, when we catch up with David Paterson, CEO of YMCA South Australia & Co – Founder of Social Capital.

Currently David Paterson serves as Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA in South Australia, which has some 700 staff working in communities across the State.

David Paterson specialises in purpose-driven growth, strategy and innovation. He has worked internationally across both the business and social sectors.

In his earlier corporate career he was:

• Chief Marketing Officer of Medibank Private, responsible for $3 billion in annual revenues and 3 million members;

• Global Chief Strategy Officer of an international digital marketing agency, with clients ranging from Cisco and Hewlett-Packard, to Toyota, General Motors, HSBC, Visa International, Pfizer, Singapore Airlines, Harvard University and No.10 Downing Street;

• Director of Business Consulting with Arthur Andersen Business Consulting, with clients ranging from new start-up tech ventures to a Prime Minister’s task force.

In more recent times he has applied these skills primarily in the for-benefit space, including as:

• Chief Innovation Officer of World Vision, the world’s largest international development NGO, with some 40,000 staff across 90 countries, serving more than 100m people p.a.. Whilst at World Vision he and his team generated around $1 billion in funding for community development projects around the world;

• Professor of Innovation & Enterprise with the University of South Australia where he designed, from the ground up, a new honours degree in Innovation with the aim of developing the next generation of entrepreneurs and social changemakers.

He also maintains his consultancy firm, Cornerstone Strategy, continuing to take on strategic projects with potential for positive social and economic impact. Examples include:

• facilitating an innovation forum at the United Nations on the future shape of the humanitarian and disaster relief sector;

• advising on how to innovate the Australian international aid program;

• developing the future vision and identity of the Riverbank Precinct;

• developing an innovation framework for the State, on behalf of the then Premier;

• developing future growth and impact strategies for various key South Australian institutions;

David is a co-founder of The Bridge Project, a ground breaking program for young offenders. It has successfully reduced recidivism from an average of 60%, to less than 3%, across 3000 participants over 10 years. It won the Australian Crime Prevention Award.

David is a Williamson Community Leadership Fellow; the Co-Founder of Social Capital; Board Member of Sight for All; and a Founding Board member of The Committee for Adelaide Inc.
